Why Write Vampires?

Two words:  Bad Boys.

Thinking of writing bad boys?  Well...heck yeah!  Why not?  Sounded...really fun.  So.  I pondered and decided that if I’m going to write bad boys, well.  I’m going to write the baddest of the bad.  The worst.  So far out there, it's almost unbelievable.  That got me to wondering.  What could be worse than a vampire?  I know!  What about one that doesn’t just kill to survive - he profits from it.

That’s it!  Vampires who are also assassins.  And why not have an entire organization of them?  A bunch of vampires who would go by...

Vampire Assassin League!

And so, it was born.

Hi.  Jackie Ivie here.  Wasting some kilobytes on my sister’s BLOG, because…well, mainly because she said I could.  I write a series of short stories (around 20,000 to 25,000 words in length) that I call the Vampire Assassin League (VAL for short).  With Just Cause is one of them.  It’s about a cowboy.  A cowboy vampire.  Hmmm.  Big.  Brawny.  Buff.  Dark.  Dangerous.  Sexy. Super hot.

Well.  That's him.  Grimm Bradley.  VAL vampire #10

But hey.  I have to tell you.  I didn’t start out writing vampires.  And I wasn’t even sure I could.  Because I didn't just want to write vampires.  I wanted mine to be different.  Way different.

Hmmm.  How to make that happen?

Well.  For starters - my vampires are brutal.  Killers.  Nothing like a bit of death and dismemberment to fully entertain a VAL vampire.  But hey.  They have to be gorgeous.  Built.  And HOT.  (Always.  I have a thing for writing hot guys).  They have to be remorseless.  No conscience.  No compassion.  Because hey.  They’re dead.  No passion.  No spark.  Their existence is an endless series of nights in a morass of eternity.

But then...

If a VAL vampire is supremely lucky…something happens.  See, in the world of the VAL, every person has just one mate.  A person slated from time immemorial as their mate.  The one.  The only.  And in VAL – like I said – if a vampire is extremely lucky, their mate will actually cross their path, and then all sorts of things start happening.  They reanimate.  Their heart starts beating in tandem with their mate.  Emotions and sensations and passions spark to life, and that means their body regenerates, too.  And that means I've got some hot loves scenes.  WooHoo!  (I’m not known for mild love scenes, in case you wondered)

Another thing?  Finding their mate doesn't guarantee anything.  They still have to convince this human that love is worth anything.  (dying and being re-born kind of anything).  And sometimes the humans are not that willing.  Or easy.  Despite how gorgeous/awesome/hot the vampire just happens to be.  And here's the kicker - the vampires just happens to get some redeeming qualities, too.  (who doesn't love a semi-reformed bad boy?)

And always, there's danger lurking in the background.  VAL has enemies.  The vampire hunters - a pseudo-militaristic group dedicated to putting a stake through each and every vampire heart they can find.  And they don't care what they have to do to make that happen.  It's a battle of good against evil.

Only...who's good?  And what's with the head vampire, Akron?  Why hasn't that guy found his mate?  Will he ever?  Don't ask me.  I'm having way too much fun writing about his "associates".   So.  There you have it.  Why I write vampires.  I have to go now.  Devereaux Castillion - my bad-guy vampire in #13, LET THEM SPEAK - is calling me.  And man!  Is he having trouble with his mate...
